Preventative Maintenance Using Laser Alignment Tools

Using a laser alignment system is an ideal way to make quick, precise and quantitative measurements. Laser alignment is a precise and efficient means of checking machinery and these products are easy to set up and use by plant or production personnel right on the factory floor. Much of the guesswork and subjectivity of traditional alignment techniques are eliminated because laser alignment equipment delivers precise, quantitative data to correct machinery flaws.

Laser alignment tools are beneficial to have not only for when a machine isn’t working properly and measurements must be taken, but also for preventative maintenance. Employees can quickly and efficiently do their own alignment. With minimal practice, the laser measuring and alignment process becomes very quick, allowing plant personnel to optimize systems on a regular basis or whenever the need arises. When laser alignment is done in house, plant personnel have a better understanding of how the machines work and become better skilled at preventative maintenance. They can proactively identify misalignment and ultimately reduce machine wear, costly breakdowns, and lost production time. The machines can be back up on line with minimum downtime and lost revenue.

Laser alignment can be mastered by plant personnel in a short period of time. They just need to understand the components of the laser alignment system and how they fit or work best with the particular type of machine. Because it’s so fast and easy, employees check their machines more often and develop a forward-looking vision for preventative maintenance so that they aren’t surprised by machine problems as often as they might be under different circumstances. Employees know what the machine is doing and can plan when the machine needs to be aligned for better operation.

Companies can determine how often alignment needs to be checked for preventative maintenance. The appropriate number of times depends on the manufacturing application. In some cases, it should be checked every hour or every shift but in other cases it can be done once a week or even quarterly.
